COLD SORES AND ESSENTIAL OILS

Is there anything worse than a cold sore?  I know that there are, but cold sores rank right up there among my Top 5 Worse Things EVER!  First the tingle then the itch and burn...and before you know it, BAM! You are having to carry your lip around in a wagon because it is so big.  Am I right?!

After experimenting with a few essential oils to see what worked best, I found the most effective recipe to be the one from Andrea Butje.  The recipe uses Sandalwood and Eucalyptus (these oils have analgesic properties to help ease the pain) plus aloe vera gel which can help accelerate the healing process and reduce blisters that are formed by the cold sores.

Cold Sore Blend:

  • 2 tsp aloe vera gel (Aloe barbadensis)
  • 10 drops Sandalwood essential oil (Santalum paniculatum)
  • 1 drop Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus radiata)
I put the aloe vera gel in a 0.5 oz Carmex® glass jar that was empty.  Blend in the essential oils (I used a little plastic pipette).

To use, just dab a bit of the blend directly onto your lips with the tip of your finger or a Q-tip.  I use this once a hour until I feel that the symptoms are under control.  Then, I dab on intermittently until the cold sore is gone.

Because this blend contains aloe vera, I recommend keeping it in the refrigerator and making a fresh blend every few weeks (if you tend to suffer from these).  Otherwise, after my cold sore episode is over, I empty out the container and wash it.  Then, I will re-fill it the next time I get a cold sore.

Which I hope is a long time from now!!

As Andrea Butje says," It is VERY IMPORTANT to use  high quality essential oils for cold sores, as Anything less could irritate the cold sore."
